Growing up in Salem, IL in the 50's and 60's was an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life. We didn't have much money, but we were always happy it seemed. We played baseball year round. From the time I was able to hold a baseball, a baseball bat and a baseball glove, I dreamed of playing in the Major Leagues. My brothers, friends, and neighbors, gathered each morning in the summer to play baseball. We started out using a baseball fashioned out of a ball of string and wrapped it with aluminum foil. Our baseball bat was an old mop or broom handle, depending on which one gave out first. Back then the streets were void of many automobiles, so we played baseball in the streets from sun up to sundown. Finally one of the more fortunate kids came up with a tennis ball and the baseball game got much more interesting. The baseball jumped off the broom handle. We had so much fun trying to keep that ball from going into any of the neighbors yards. Self taught fundamentals of baseball I guess. We called it "Indian Ball". To this day I haven't a clue of why it was called that. The rules were simple: Keep the baseball between the sidewalks and you were safe. Any deviation and you were out. If the baseball went over the head of the infielder, it was a double. Over the outfielder was a triple and over the "Dead End sign before the railroad tracks was a home run. Any ground ball that that got by the first fielder was a single. We played nine innings of course just like the Major Leagues. Bry's Corner Store: Baseball...A Boy...and a Dream!
